Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions offers a smooth blend of lounge styles featuring vocalist Sarah Byrne, James Groves on piano and Peter McDonald on electric bass and tuba. Together since 2002, they are regulars at Casino Canberra and enjoy playing a variety of functions as well as the Merimbula Jazz Festival.

Canberra Jazz blog reviewed their gig just before Christmas at the Folkus Room saying they were 'swinging, light, presentable, sellable', and with '...lovely tunes and comfortably swung'.

Strong supporters of ArtSound FM since recording their second demo in the new Manuka studios, FAQ are looking forward to capturing that relaxed ambience again for Friday Night Live on 13 February.

Key Grip

Key Grip

Key Grip is a Canberra blues and swing outfit led by Leo Joseph on piano, Hammond and vocals.  Leo plays in a number of outfits around town but is not averse to occasionally putting together his own hand-picked outfit, Key Grip.

You might catch Key Grip in a bar on a Friday night cranking out some swing and jump blues with its full 7 piece format including the three-piece Gripping Stuff Horn Section. Or you might find them lazing away on a sunny Sunday afternoon as Key Grip Lite with a stripped-down line-up of keys, drums, sax and bass.  Regardless of the form Key Grip takes when you hear it, their aim is always to take you to that wonderful grey area where blues and jazz overlap by playing some blues tunes with some twists.

Key Grip’s repertoire features a good number of tunes by Percy Mayfield, the Poet of the Blues, who is one of Leo’s blues heroes!  And there is an eclectic sprinkling of tunes by Hammond players such as Jimmy Smith and Tony Monaco, guitarists like B.B. King and Jimmie Vaughan, some early Ray Charles tunes and some covers of contemporary blues outfits like Big Joe and the Dynaflows.

With Mitch Preston on drums, and Phil Jenkins or Greg Moss on bass, the Very Reverend Dave Blanken on guitar and the Gripping Stuff Horn Section of James LeFevre, Tom Fell and Nick Combe right behind it all in lock-step, you know you’re gonna have fun!

Key Grip have been described as an “intriguing mesh of the intellectual and complex nature of jazz with the simpler but true and involving sounds of the blues” while Leo has been described as “making simple but apt blues statements from the heart of the tradition.”

The Joe Lloyd Quintet features:

Ed Rodriguez-Drums

Key Grip

Fats Homicide grew out of the rhythm section for Mechanical Pterodactyl, a side project of Drummer Yen Nguyen from local jazz/funk/hiphop outfit Casual Projects.

After Yen moved to Melbourne, Kay, Matt and Simon decided to keep playing and work on their own music. Drawing on a range of musical interests, the 'Cide functions as a musical experiment -never quite sure of the end result, but always enjoying the journey.

Fats Homocide features:

Kay Chinnery - traps

Matt Lustri - gats

Simon Milman - flaps

Axel Foley Trio

Jo Lloyd Qu

Damien Foley is a well known local guitarist who was a full time member of the Australian Army Band Corps a year or so ago. Since resuming civilian life he has found more time to write original compositions that reflect his love of melodic standards, blues and improvisation.

Damien graduated from the Canberra School of Music in 1998 and has shared the stage with many of Australia's top Jazz performers including James and John Morrison, Dale Barlow, Andrew Robson and Adam Armstrong. He has also performed with a diverse range of artists from James Blundell to Tom Burlinson, Delta Goodrem to Gina Jeffries.

Damien has spent many years refining his composition and arranging skills. His love of Jazz is complemented by his passion for the guitar in all its stylistic incarnations. Damien will perform many of his own compositions as well as some of his favourite standard. He is excited about the two musicians supporting him Lachlan Coventry (bass) and Chris Thwaite (drums) who are well-known and respected musicians in Canberra.

Quantum Theory

Quantum Theory

What originally began as a regular jam session quickly became an original unit, composing music that extended and emphasised group dialogue and interaction. The musicians focus on music that allows and encourages expression of the group's identity as a whole, rather than as individuals. The band's challenge is to remain true to this concept, without falling into the abyss of directionless and aimless music that often disguises itself as "free" music.
