BlackSchu Band
Accomplished pianist and singer John Black, energetic drummer Ben Schumann and special guest Richard Booth on sax.
The group will be entertaining the Canberra region with a tantalizing mix of blues, jazz, latin and boogey-woogey covers as well as some fresh originals.
John Black and Ben Schumann formed the BlackSchu Band in 2004 with the main objective of enjoying every note played. This has largely been achieved. In 2007 they embarked on a project of playing blues and boogie without guitar or bass. While seeming foolhardy to some, it did fulfill the main objective of being really enjoyable. They went on to record their first CD at ArtSound recording studios in a session that is said to have had the musicians ‘tearing up’ the floor from the first not to the last. Look out of their latest CD ‘just a touch of anarchy’ available soon.
Anton Wurzer & Samuel Berthod
An international duo featuring Canberra-based accordion player Anton Wurzer and French clarinet player Samuel Berthod will be entertaining Canberra audiences for one hour as an amazing instrumental duo that came together by pure chance.
The duo will perform mostly originals not heard in public before and a number freshly arranged covers. Listen in for an interview with the artists and the weekly Canberra Jazz gig guide for all the best places to catch jazz week to week in the nation’s capital.
Wayne Kelly Trio
The Wayne Kelly Trio will feature Wayne Kelly on piano, Mark Sutton on drums and Eric Ajaye on Bass with special guest Con Campbell on sax. Wayne has been playing music since he was 12 years old; his love for jazz began when armed with his headphones and trusty radio he listened to the local station that played all types of Jazz.
Wayne has performed at many festivals through Australia including Manly, Thredbo, Adelaide and Canberra Jazz festivals. Now at 37 years of age Wayne continues to be heard with his self-titled trio at Canberra’s home of Jazz the Hippo Bar and many other venues.
The Wayne Kelly Trio's debut ablum, 'In My Quiet Hour' will be ArtSound FM's Cd of the Week from 28 June to 4 July. Tune in to ArtSounds mixed programs during that week for your chance to win a copy!
Austin Benjamin Trio
The Austin Benjamin Trio is a young, energetic and eclectic group bringing the value of both structured and improvised music to a wider audience. The sounds are a synthesis of electronica, folk, rock and jazz presenting them in an acoustic context and can be heard on the debut album 'Amalgama' due for release in November 2008.(exclusive preview release @ANU band room 31st July)

The Lethals
After a successful debut CD Launch at the Hippo Bar, Civic and performances at the Merrimbula Jazz Festival this fresh Canberra ensemble is back to up tempo and excite the aural pleasures for all Art Sound FM Listeners. They will take you on a round the world journey stopping at the desinations of soul, funk, experimental, groove, fusion, break beat, improvistaions and contemporary jazziness.
They aim to push the boundaries of improvisation of the jazz idiom during their live sets by sourcing new grooves, new sounds and pushing each other to the extreme to give a high energy and exciting live performance! Each individual contributes their own orginal compostions and arrangements of known tunes to the ensemble, bringing much diversity and exploring a large musical spectrum.
Led by Leigh Miller's drivin bass sounds, Mr Sam Young's thumpin grooves, Ben Foster's fluid soundscapes on the keys and Lyon's firey axe work this a gig not be missed!.
James Le Fevre Quintet
The James Le Fevre Quintet (JLFQ) is soon to embark on their National tour promoting the release of their debut album “Point A”. The group bills themself as a Jazz outfit but they draw influence from an eclectic range of genres including; Jazz, Rock, Funk, Hip Hop, Blues, Dance, Pop, New Orleans, Latin, Drum ‘n’ Bass and gypsy music of the Balkans.
JLFQ can be characterised by their use of contrast between intricate, extended arrangements and open, exploratory sections of improvisation. The James Le Fevre Quintet has come a long way in a short amount of time. The group from Canberra met through study of the Bachelor of Jazz Music at the Australian National University School of Music.
JLFQ formed in February of last year with the idea of pursuing performance opportunities where the band was supported in expressing themselves through original music. They started out like many bands do playing some of their own material and fleshing out their repertoire with songs from other composers. But as they started to develop a band sound they started writing more and now have fifteen original tunes and five unique arrangements.
Kooky Fandango
Kooky Fandango is a six piece funk/jazz band born following a jam at the Old Canberra Inn. They play a mixture of original music and covers in jazz, blues, soul, swing and funk styles. The band is made up of Cameron Smith (Trumpet and vocals), Tom Fell (Alto Sax), Nathan Sciberras (Baritone Sax), Pete B (six string bass and vocals) George Cora (Percussion), Courtney Stark-Smith (Vocals).
Members of KF have performed alongside or as support acts for Bob Barnard, Don Burrow, Ross Irwin, George Golla, Glen Terry, Jonno Zilber and K.C and the Sunshine band. Previous gigs include performances at Knightsbridge Lounge Bar, The Soul Bar, The Phoenix, George Harcourt Inn, Tilba Winery
Review - "I caught Kooky fandango, an eclectic jazz quintet, or as Liepman Calls them,'the horny little big band'; their stylish trumpet and sax lines are straight out of a Cake song and with a bit of funk and mariachi thrown in they're definately worth a look" - BMA MAGAZINE
Sally Greenaway Project
Featuring some of the best up-and-coming musicians from the ANU's School of Music, the Sally Greenaway Project will be playing an eclectic mix of standards, modern jazz, spicy latin, reflective French and European jazz, and original compositions and arrangements.
Originally formed as an outlet to perform, record and experiment with original compositions, the project has now grown to include fresh arrangements of jazz standards, with even the odd jazzed-up classical work thrown in! They have performed at sell-out concerts at Alliance Francaise, Merimbula and Moruya Jazz Festivals and numerous other venues, tantalising audiences with fresh ideas and big aspirations.
Although the number of musicians and line-up changes from time to time, one thing always remains - the Sally Greenaway Project is always striving to bring audiences the fun and excitement of original music! Playing on Friday Night live; Hugh Deacon on drums, Raf Jerjen on double bass, Marie Le Brun on vocals, Sally Greenaway on piano and special guest Neils Rosendahl on Sax!
